Albert Donaldson
Presently running a trans-x straight cut gearbox fitted with quaife top cover. Has anybody ever modified the top cover to add a dip stick? Access to the fill level plug is almost impossible and as the gearbox seems to sweat slightly I would like a quick method of checking the oil level and am contemplating making a dipstick.Any ideas welcome.Albert
Jonathan Kay
Quaife make a top cover with an access hole:http://cfront.burtonpower.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/285x/dbee39002c3ed3c5438224ee0989910f/G/B/GBT9101_Top_Cover_4.jpgWhich way do you get to yours: up from below or through a hole in the tunnel?Jonathan
Mankee
BGH supply an alloy lid with a screw-in dipstick. I find it very useful. Technically, an oil-tight box should never lose oil but...
Jonathan Kay
Discussed here, with Mankee's photo:(If that image doesn't appear inline, try here.)Jonathan
Albert Donaldson
The cover above is what I have but under the orange breather is a right angle ie it doesn't go straight down into the box, I use this for filling but cant check level through it. I was thinking of drilling and tapping a hole in the front rhs when viewed from behind as per mankees box above. The allen plug on the side is a one hour event to get to and utilise to check level and involves a lot of cursing. Thanks for the replies.Albert. Jonathan Kay
How about the hole in the tunnel?(I'm happy with the approach from below, have sawn off some hex section, and won't be repeating the ratchet spanner fiasco now that I understand the subtle difference between the two types. And mine doesn't lose any oil.)Jonathan
