Sierra 5spd gearbox problem

My (high mileage) Sierra 5spd gearbox will occasionally decide to

baulk any attempt to engage a gear.These occasions have become more and more frequent and the car is now not really driveable.In between the baulking events it works perfectly.Stopping the engine frees it up which would make me suspect the clutch is not disengaging, but I can't see how this could be intermittent on a cable clutch.Perhaps it is the selectors

at fault.Any ideas ?

Which gears are the worst and is it worse going up the box or down. Most common problem is synchro ring wear/failure, usually 3rd gear, usually worse going down the box.

 

This is fixable but it's a gearbox out job.

Thanks Alex - I thought it might be.5th is the only gear you can really get,even reverse won't go in and makes a terrible noise when you try.I guess I'll be spending some time on my back underneath it.

I had the same thing on my XF. Don't run it. I suspect that your clutch is dead. When I removed the clutch my clutch springs fell out, some had broken. New clutch, no problems. ☹️

Does sound as if the clutch isn't 'clearing' for one reason or another!

When I fitted my twin plate clutch, it had a significant amount of drag before it bedded down. (ie it didn't disengage properly). The gear shift was horrid until the clutch settled.
