And would tap water be OK for dilution or better go and buy some deionised water?(K series, 1.8 Engine)Thank youAhmed
Dr Slotter
Ideally, deionised.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 18, 2015 Member Share Posted March 18, 2015 The temperature protection against concentration is in this data sheet. The manufacturers recommend deionised water.I don't have any data on this but I suspect that many owners use tap water without any bad effects. The Haynes manual for the Rover engine doesn't mention the need for deionised water. Changing the coolant frequently is a good idea.Jonathan
Titanium7
I believe it's around 50:50 concentration.
John Vine
Yes, 50/50 is a good figure to aim for. Protects down to -36C according to Comma. Re water, I'd go for deionised. But if you happen to live in a very soft-water area, tap water will be fine. If you use a dehumidifier around the house, use the condensed water from that (practically distilled).JV
glasgow
50/50 it is then.Good idea to use the dehumidifier water, save me a journey to the petrol station.
The Headmaster
You should use Evans Coolant. No mixing required.
Viblue7
Is Comma G30 the same as Xstream Red as I only get offered the G30 when I ask for the Red?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 19, 2016 Member Share Posted May 19, 2016 Is Comma G30 the same as Xstream Red as I only get offered the G30 when I ask for the Red?What engine do you want to cool?Jonathan
Viblue7
It's a Sigma 125 having a radiator swap and CC said to buy locally.Martin
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 20, 2016 Member Share Posted May 20, 2016 Sigma enginesThe Owner's Handbook says: Engine Coolant CSR/R400: Comma X-stream Red OAT Ford Sigma: Ford Super Plus Anti-frezz The Caterham website says: Miller "Alpine Antifreeze" 5L, "will need to be mixed with water", and the label says "Red"But the term "Red" is not used consistently across manufacturers.I'd go to Halfords and check their table of equivalent products for that Ford branded stuff mentioned in the Handbook. (NB Club discount.)What does everyone else use in Sigma engines, please?Jonathan
Viblue7
Hi JonathanMy handbook refers to Comma Xstream Red or Ford Antifrezz for Duratec or Sigma engines.CC tell me that they use Millers now as they are a race sponsor.i will check as you suggest and I am interested to see what others say on this.ThxMartin
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 20, 2016 Member Share Posted May 20, 2016 Ah... now I understand your question. In the K world we established (1,2) that: Comma Xstream "Red" is Comma Xstream G30, XSM5L. It's the right stuff. The cheapest source of ready mixed was Amazon UK.Jonathan
CharlesElliott
I don't think you are strictly correct in saying the Xstream "Red" = G30.Comma have a range of 'generic' coolant products, and their 5 year coolant is "Super Longlife Red".They also have 'manufacturer approved coolants' of which G30 is one. Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 20, 2016 Member Share Posted May 20, 2016 Agreed. The Red was in quotes because of how others refer to it in the K world/ forums. That ambiguity is why I put the correct title, part number and hyperlink.:-)But is it the right stuff for Sigma engines? (And at least "Sigma" is unambiguous, unlike "Zetec" and "Duratec"!)Jonathan
Viblue7
Thx for the comments guys.I spoke to Comma Technical Support (Vince) and was told that both products would be alright to use in a Sigma engine in a Caterham. On looking at the data sheets for both coolants, the Super Longlife Red does not have silicates and other additives and the G30 does. The Super Longlife Red is recommended for Ford, the G30 does not mention Ford in the manufacturers listed. These seems to indicate the Super Longlife Red to me - pity the handbook isn't more helpful. Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 20, 2016 Member Share Posted May 20, 2016 Thanks for the information from Comma.(I'd buy the cheaper.)Jonathan
Blacken
You can get Comma G30 ready mixed but most Auto factors sell the concentrate because it is better value.
Dave J
I use prestone as it doesn't oxidise aluminium like the OAT coolants.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 21, 2016 Member Share Posted May 21, 2016 I use prestone as it doesn't oxidise aluminium like the OAT coolants. What does that mean, please?Lots of 7 engines seem quite happy on the coolant recommended by the factory. And I'd assumed that the surface of waterways was oxidised in the same way as aluminium exposed to air. Is that not right?ThanksJonathan
John Vine
I use prestone I've not come across that manufacturer before. Which particular product do you recommend?JV
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 22, 2016 Member Share Posted May 22, 2016 Prestone company web site. North American. All of the data sheets I've looked at so far say it's ethylene gycol with some additives.Jonathan
