Martin J
As the title says....Bugger. A spot of maintenance today, rear one done fine but the gun was stuck fast to the nipple on the front one. Gave it a yank & it sheared. The good news is I have been able to unthread the remains Can you buy just the grease nipple & stem or do I have to buy the whole joint? Caterham do sell the joint at a reasonable price.Just had another look on the CC site & found this, happy days, may even order as spare for next time.http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_product=1144
SM25T
You should be able to buy a grease nipple from several places locally Martin.
DJ.
That was unfortunate, but like you say at least you got the rest out!It would have been really annoying having to remove the propshaft just for that.Duncan
Martin J
Well, for under a fiver delivered I have ordered one Ian. It is on a long stem & not just the nipple I need. A huge relief getting the remains of the old one out.
Martin J
Still don't know why the gun was so stuck on Duncan?
Titanium7
Been there, done that!Pretty easy to get the remains out with a cheap set of screw extractors off fleabay.
Martin J
Part arrived today & it does not fit. I reckon the replacement is about 1mm greater in diameter.I can't see caterham are going to be much help now. I will try my good local motor factors & see if they can help me. Martin J
My digital micrometer has bust but very roughly it's about 5mm.
DJ.
That's a pain, just typical of Caterham. If you want to use the car, you could pop a small bolt in the hole, if you have one the right size.Duncan
Martin J
The joint has plenty of grease in it Duncan but I suppose the risk is that with centrifugal force grease could leak out? The bolt is an idea, just need to be careful not to bugger the female thread.Put it this way, a missing grease nipple is not going to stop me taking the 7 on this years Euro trip to the Dolomites. I'm sure something will turn up if I keep searching. No wonder it snapped, it looks very fragile when seen on it's own.

Titanium7
In regards to what caused the breakage, the end of the gun jamming onto the nipple, this was exactly what happened with me.I replace the fixed nozzle of the gun with a flexible one and then found the the 'nose' of the gun which attaches to the nipple is threaded and can be unscrewed by hand to open the attaching inner jaws and visa versa before you pump the grease in. Obviously unscrew again to remove the jaws from the nipple.(this does sound a bit like something out 50 Shades of Grey)Works the same way as a drill chuck
Martin J
My new gun has a flexi hose but I didn't know about unscrewing the end to lessen it's grip, thanks.
Martin J
I assume the one CC sent is this size.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GREASE-NIPPLES-IMP-1-4-UNF-Z-P-LONG-TYPE-QTY-10-/360157195795?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item53db0aae13. There is no description with it.but I need to find out what size the old obsolete one is. If I do find out I will post here as others may run into the same problem. My car is only coming up to 8 years old.

Martin J
It would seem new one is 1/4 UNF & broken one is M6 x 1.0.
Martin J
After more research I have found a supplier of the smaller grease nipple.I rang CC parts this morning & they were aware there are two different sizes but only keep the larger 1/4 UNF one. If you are unlucky & need a replacement & it's the smaller one you need one of these. M6 X 1 30mm long.Cat no 608661 from these guys. http://www.mooreinternational.co.uk/category-70.html
David Mirylees
Sorry but can't resist passing on the name of the people that I used for many of my engineering years http://www.thenippleshop.co.uk/ They have a great catalogue so may have any part that may be required in the future.
