Rear suspension bushes

I have a built-from-new '96 Roadsport with (I know it's pathetic) just 8000 miles. Only maintenance has been annual oil &filter changes, 2-yearly brake and radiator fluids and wheel bearing adjustment etc. Doing a few clean up/rust repair jobs this winter and would appreciate any advice on how to go about checking for rear suspension wear. What has to come apart to check the bushes or do you simply keep driving it over bumpy Suffolk roads until the clonking starts? How many miles should they last with old duffer road driving? Also how many miles/time between 6 speed gearbox and diff oil changes? Many thanks out there!

A good visual check with a bright light is usually enough to assertain the condition of most rubber bushes, as is using a pry bar to phisically move the offending bush. Most bushes last for a long time in normal service, but do wear rapidly if the car is used for any racing applications, also their service life is drastically reduced if oil is allowed to pass on them,ie- from a leaky gearbox or an engine breather. Ultra voilet light also degrades the rubber, but being on the underside the car this does not repressent a problem, if they are very old they will show signs of cracking/ crumbling.
