Gregs79
Hi,Just fitting some new Mintex pads front and rear and just wondering if someone can advise which way I need to wing the rear calipers and AP fronts? Thanks in advance.Gregs
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 5, 2015 Member Share Posted March 5, 2015 The best guide I know is Alcester Racing 7s.AFAIK standard fronts are pushed back not wound back, and standard rears are wound back clockwise. Are there any systems on 7s that have pistons that are wound back counterclockwise? Please could you post the solution for AP fronts when you find it?Jonathan
Grubbster
Clockwise for the rears but no need to wind back the fronts.
SM25T
Clockwise rears and it takes quite a push !
martyn
With a bit of googling recently, I was able to find a pdf of the chapter in the sierra Haynes manual that covers the rear brakes. It gives pretty good coverage including removal, refitting, torque settings, using a windback tool, calliper cleaning and overhaul, etc.I won’t post it here for obvious legal reasons. However, if you want more info on the rear brakes then you know what to do..... .............. go out and buy a Haynes manual, of course!
colindavies56
It's easier if you remove the reservoir cap first.
SM25T
And some fluid ..... to avoid overspill onto the scuttle !

Gregs79
I have tried and can't seem to get the rear pistons to move even a small amount. Any other suggestions? :-(
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 6, 2015 Member Share Posted March 6, 2015 Were the old ones worn thin?Which tool are you using?Jonathan
Gregs79
Jonathan,They were hardly used, replacing with Mintex pads. The tool i'm using is the same as:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-NEW-BRAKE-CALIPER-PISTON-REWIND-WIND-BACK-TOOL-KIT-22-34-PIECES-SET-/360643337387Gregs
Ozzy
JK.Counterclockwise!!!No offence to our American friends, but that really isn't Cricket old chap!Oz....
SM25T
Don't turn it anticlockwise. ..... it will fall out of caliper. Trust me !
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 6, 2015 Member Share Posted March 6, 2015 Is your concern about getting enough clearance to fit the new pads, or that you think the pistons should wind back... and they won't?Jonathan
Gregs79
Jonathan,Its the fact that I can't wind the pistons back, they don't seem to budge at all! As a result I don't get the clearance I need to put the pads in.Gregs
SM25T
Maybe it has come off the end of the threaded stud and tilted slightly so you can't start the thread ..... but surely only if old pads were worn to nothing ? Is it turning but not screwing in, or not turning ?
SM25T
Had this on one that wouldn't do anything. Turned it anticlockwise in desperation .... piston popped out of caliper with loss of fluid .... but it was then easy to start ... and screwed home quickly. Have you tried opening bleed nipple with a length of hose and pot to catch the fluid while you turn and push the tool ?
Gregs79
Tried both options and both sides at the back. Neither will budge either clockwise and anti-clockwise! Have also removed reservoir cap and undone bleed nipples whilst trying to undo! Puzzled somewhat!
chris956
Take the pads out and with an extra person press the brake pedal slightly ( providing all other wheels have brakes fitted and in place ) to tease out the piston slightly and replicate a very worn pad. Once you see movement then you know you have movement to turn it back into the housing. Having just done mine they were very stiff to start with. Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 8, 2015 Member Share Posted March 8, 2015 Counterclockwise!!! No offence to our American friends, but that really isn't Cricket old chap!:-)I knew that I was in a minority in that usage but had no idea there was a transatlantic rift. Thanks. As it happens I know exactly why I say that: my mother insisted that counter- didn't have quite the same sense of "against" as "anti-". I'm not sure that I agree. But it is more euphonius. But it's still amazing that in a thread with "Caliper" in the Subject the disputed point of usage between British English and American English is another word!Jonathan
Gregs79
Brakes all sorted after removing the handbrake and using all the info above! Thanks for everyone's input. :-)
