Ted_7
Hello On my recently re-head-gasketed 1.6K, I noticed for the second time, small drops of liquid coolant on the expansion bowl (not sure of the term, it's just the bowl under the nose cone where you put water in 😬 ). There are just a few drops, the bowl is well locked, but water seems to get out of it ! The coolant level when the car is cold is still normal (in 2500kms).  Do I have to worry or check somewhere else ? Thanks for your help  Se7enly, Ted_7
scooby dooby doo
if its overfilled or overheated then the header tank cap lets coolant out as a pressure relief. But this damages the cap so it needs replacing (few quid from a rover dealer - don't get from caterham) . Are you seeing any overheating problems 🤔 Are there white streaky marks over the front og the engine, chassis etc where the coolant has dried 🤔 Its probably nothing more serious than overfilling and a new cap and wipe clean to solve everything. worth wiping clean now and see if anymore comes out as well. HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
Ted_7
As I said, I had a head gasket replacement lately, so it overheated at that time, but not anymore. I guess I'll change the cap as you suggest, we'll see then if it's still leaking. Thanks again hoopy ! Se7enly, Ted_7
scooby dooby doo
ah right - that would explain it. I expect you'll find that its running hotter than ideal as the pressure isn't being maintained properly by the cap. HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
Ted_7
Indeed !  I asked for that several weeks ago but didn't get any answer to it ! Gonna buy a new cap Monday ! Is this a standard Rover part ? Got any reference (if it's not too much to ask for 😬 ) Se7enly, Ted_7
scooby dooby doo
std rover part it think. take the old one in and ask for a new one i guess (worth getting a couple as they're cheap and the problem is getting round to the dealer)Â HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
Ted_7
I'll do that, thank you Hoopy. Se7enly, Ted_7
wonkey eyed barmaid
boing. I have a similar question: I found recently that the inside 'roof' of my nose cone has a dried in white powdery residue, and put it down to dried in salt that I hadnt rinsed off properly. but could this be coolant having sprayed out of the header tank cap? the water temp guage on the dash rarely gets up higher than (i think) 60 degrees. (about 1/3 of the dial range) can this guage be trusted, or could I be overheating unknowingly? at what water temp should my cooling fan kick in? scooby dooby doo
sounds like residue. 60 C sounds low, but the gauges are a bit crap. fan kicks in at 88-90 i think, its switched by a thermostatis switch mounted in the radiator - these often fail as well.. Hence I get the Emerald to switch the fan for me. HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
sjwb
There is NO need to renew the cap for performing its intended function *confused* . Excess pressure venting is how it maintains system performance. Steve B
scooby dooby doo
i've been recommended to do so by several people and have solved problems by just replacing it. I fully admit to not ever having taken one to bits to see why it should work like this - but it does appear so to do.... HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
Peter Carmichael
The caps break sometimes. They stop working. Coolant piddles out. When this time comes, you get a coolant residue around the front of the engine and streaks on the top of the expansion tank. At this time you buy a new one for 3 quid fifty from a Rover dealer. Are you still?
scooby dooby doo
do we know what breaks on the cap 🤔 making a reuable pressure relief valve (ie a header tank cap) can't be that difficult surely 🤔 HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
