Approved Helmets

Quite right, Alex. Years of training allow us to do this!

I think a full face helmet will always afford more protection than an open one. A helmet can be safely removed if done properly (i.e with the cervical spine controlled) it's just a matter of knowing how - a bit like mouth to mouth. Severe facial injuries can make it very difficult to ventilate someone even if you can get to their face, because the damage that's been done to the airway. I'd always go for a full face helmet (I like as small an aperture as possible) and I always buy the best I can possibly afford.

Sorry I've been off.

What I heard about different impacts is that a bike helmet tends to be designed to handle multiple impacts (as the rider's head bouces down the road) whereas motorsport helmets are designed more to handle one big impact (bouncing off a rollbar or whatever when a car hits something). This may all be conjecture on the part of whomever it was that said it.

I hadn't thought about the resucitation aspect of an open face helmet, but it wouldn't sway me from a closed face.

I also heard about the concerns of high spine injuries about wearing a collar.

Cheers,
