I'm in the middle of rebuilding a replacement diff for my car (ie it's in bits!), and do not have to hand any details of the tightening torques for the relevant components. I need to know:- 1. Crownwheel bolt to diff assy torque 2. Diff bearing cap bolt torque 3. Pinion shaft drive flange nut torque 4. Procedure for setting backlash and the tightening torque for the thrust nuts. Dermott McGivern Posted January 16, 2003 Share Posted January 16, 2003 Using std bolts etc and NEW pinion nut and crush sleeve. Crown wheel bolts 30-35lb-ft Cap retaining bolts 45-50lb-ft Lock plates 12 - 15 lb-ft Hold flange with 2 bolts through prop holes into piece of flat steel 2 ft long (clearanced for socket)tighten new nut until sudden rise in torque requirement. (Bearings against sleeve) wrap about 1 metre of 2 mm string around pinion (behind flange) Hang 5litre can of water on string this is roughly equal to the 10 lb-ft pre-load required on the pinion bearing when NEW. continue to tighten pinion nut until water can falls smoothly and with out any end float or roughness being apparent. Asthis state is very difficult to describe I can only suggest that you try it out with no sleeve and an old nut until you get the feel for it. Pinion bearing should be oiled. If you are re-using bearing a rough guess would be 1 ltr of water not 5 . Good luck D If you like it do it again Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
