zetec
My rattle seems t be creeping up the rev range on tickover.i did have the idle set for 900 but it made a dreadful noise so I've raised it. It now seem to start rattling at 1000 rpm .is this a concern?
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted December 19, 2014 Area Representative Share Posted December 19, 2014 Mine's rattled at 1000 rpm for the last 50k+ miles. Goes when clutch depressed. No problems.
Nigel Riches
Use earplugs, no rattles, unless they are really bad. What gearbox do you have? Some after market types are noisier than standard eg Quaife or BGH. If the noise is increasing, perhaps there is a future upgrade ahead. My 'box screamed for 20000 miles, but never missed a change, never crunched, always slick, (thanks BGH). Keep an ear on it, and pay attention to how the change action might be deteriorating, the lay shaft bearing in the 2 l type 9 box is a known weakness. The heavy duty, ie, 2.8 type 9 box had a different lay shaft bearing, some what larger than the 2l type. Regards, Nigel.
Mechanical Moz
Like Paul's mine has done 55k+ and has rattled all the time I've had it (around 10k), never got any worse. In fact if I can hear the lay shaft rattling it means the VVC mech must be having one of it's quieter days.
Birkin S3 ZA.
I would not worry about the rattle at idle, if its wineing in all the gears except 4th then its time to look at it.Chris.
Nigel Riches
Hey Chris. Mine whines in all gears, except 4th, but it is a straight cut 'box, so to be expected,' tis really in car music. Regards, Nigel.
Birkin S3 ZA.
Yes I know what you mean, I had a tran X box with straight cut gears with my Zetech that was good fun. The loud noise in fifth spoilt the fun when at just normal speeds though. Now moved over to a Duratec and Caterham six speed, this is on a new level of noises and funChris. Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted December 24, 2014 Area Representative Share Posted December 24, 2014 The Type 9 in my 11 year old 45,000 mile K series always rattled. But to quieten it right down I drained out the Ford ATF recommended by CC & put in good old thick & smelly OEP Gear Box oil.Quiet enough not to notice that much at 800/950 rpm tickover.
