5 speed lay shaft tickover rattle

Use earplugs, no rattles, unless they are really bad.

What gearbox do you have?

Some after market types are noisier than standard eg Quaife or BGH.

If the noise is increasing, perhaps there is a future upgrade ahead.

My 'box screamed for 20000 miles, but never missed a change,  never crunched, always slick,  (thanks BGH).

Keep an ear on it, and pay attention to how the change action might be deteriorating, the lay shaft bearing in the 2 l type 9 box is a known weakness.

The heavy duty, ie, 2.8 type 9 box had a different lay shaft bearing, some what larger than the 2l type.

Regards, Nigel.

The Type 9 in my 11 year old 45,000 mile K series always rattled.

But to quieten it right down I drained out the Ford ATF recommended by CC & put in good old thick & smelly OEP Gear Box oil.

Quiet enough not to notice that much at 800/950 rpm tickover.
