MBE ECU and K Series

I've got an MBE 9A4 ECU which I want to use on my EU2 1.8K which currently uses the standard Mems ECU. What is the easiest/best way of wiring it? It would be ideal if there were an adaptor, but I guess not. 

What have others done?

By the way, interested in a lead to connect MBE to laptop if anyone has one surplus to requirements.

I'd expect swapping the engine loom would be the easiest way Paul, I know a club member that did this a few years ago having found a used loom from an R***.

Emerald do an eu2 adaptor, but you would have to cut the Emerald plug off and repin it and then use the mbe connector

The pin out/in order for the 9A4 is different to the 967 that the loom will be matched to.

The 9A4 pin outs are available on SBD's website.  You will have to re configure the order.  It should then work.

If you have to re-pin for the 9A4 ECU and you don't currently have the 36-pin connector, you can purchase it and the separate pins from SBD. I found it imperative to use a proper ratcheting crimping tool if you have to change the pins, a 0.5-1.0 mm^2 open barrel crimper is needed, I purchased this one for the equivalent of £45 that has interchangeable jaws for all common crimp connections: http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/7-pc-professional-quick-change-ratcheting-wire-terminal-crimper-kit/A-p8355331e I'm not sure if it is available in the UK, as the vendor is Canadian, but I'm sure an equivalent can be found.

Forgive the novice questions.

If I understand correctly I simply need to take the existing plug of my engine loom and swap for an MBE plug?

I get the MBE pin out wiring diagram from SBDs website. I just need to know which of the existing loom wires connect to what.

Anyone got a wiring diagram for my MEMS ECU?

Sorry Paul. I thought you were starting with an MBE 967 loom.

 

I would not even attempt to butcher the MeMS - you will have nothing left.

 

Find an MBE loom and start there but its still quite a bit of work.

 

I would get a bespoke loom made.

Thanks for your advice Simon. If I understand correctly, SBD do a loom for a rear wheel drive car here and it looks like this will be my best starting point unless someone has a loom from an Rxxx that they want to move on.

Alternatively I might sell the MBE ECU and go for an Emerald ECU.

If you have the pin out for the MEMS ECU and at least about 50mm of slack in the current loom to the ECU, it is fairly straightforward to re-pin to the MBE ECU 36-pin plug. I've changed and added pins on my 9A4, the most important things are to take your time and obtain the right crimping and stripping tools (I see Farmell have suitable crimpers) get some spare pins from MBE and practice a few crimps before doing the real loom.
