CREE LED sidelights for use as DRLs

Hi John

The connection looks OK but I think you might find these are too directional because where the bulbs are positioned in the headlamp bowls. You should look for some on the sides of the bulb not at the front. This will give a better spread of light.

I use the Cree LED shown in the first post. They are really bright at night. Not sure they would qualify as DRL though. Will look in daylight when I get a chance.

JK: Yes, I have. In fact, it was the reference to Cree there (but without details) that triggered this post.

What I'm looking for is an alternative to using headlights in relatively good daylight conditions.  I do like to alert people of my approach, especially as my car is as black as night!  Maybe Mavic82's solution would be better solution?

Or you could stick side emitting strips around the inside circumference of the headlight bowls eg here or here (no idea how bright these will be in daylight.

Or just change the headlights for LED

I found the standard single Crees are bright enough to use as DRLs.  Even though they point upwards, the lens means that plenty does go forward.

Now running these which also have LEDs on the sides.  Slight improvement but it is still the Cree at the tip producing most of the light

Thanks RedCat7, that's helpful. 

When you turn the headlights on at night, is the LED light still apparent?  Does it dazzle?  (I'm thinking of the DRL regs that say they should switch off or dim when headlights come on.)

The headlight overpowers the sidelight. On my Mazda6 the sidelight is separate ..... and the Cree LED is still very bright ... even compared to the bi-xenon headlights !
