Member Jonathan Kay Posted November 20, 2021 Member Share Posted November 20, 2021 "... are the hub nuts on current cars 41mm or 42mm?"The current Assembly Guides (v2.1) do not answer this question. They say that they're handed and need 270 Nm but not their size. https://www.caterhamcars.com/en/aftersales/owners-downloadsAnd this is unusual. For many other fasteners they have a description in the fastener pack and say which tool is needed.Jonathan
GulfSeven
I guess I'll have to measure if it's such a mystery! Is there an easy way to remove the wheel centre caps without removing the wheel and knocking them out from behind?
Benton
The lazy mans solution ..... order both 41mm and 42mm using Amazon Prime next day delivery and return the one that doesn't fit Mine measured 41mm for the two 2018 cars I've owned
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 20, 2021 Leadership Team Share Posted November 20, 2021 There's been some discussion on this before and it'd be worth doing some searching. If I recall correctly, and this would need to be verified, the o/e Ford ones are 41mm, these are the type Caterham will supply. However aftermarket ones are 41mm/42mm for the LH/RH thread, each side is handed. I also recall some comment that it's recommended to stick to the o/e version.Stu. Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted November 20, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted November 20, 2021 Strange that the nut size has changed as it has been 41mm since I can ever remember & that is going back to 1994. When did the size change occur as up to 2013/14 or so it was 41mm ?Purposely never mentioned the nut size in the guide because if one is contemplating the check then you must be spanner wise enough to either already have the socket after a home build or can work it out. Just glad I did not state 41mm as apparently I could be wrong for later cars.
John Vine
Is there an easy way to remove the wheel centre caps without removing the wheel and knocking them out from behind?Yes, assuming yours have the usual four plastic retaining tabs:Carefully insert a thin knife blade under one edge, and another on the opposite side. With gentle prising, the cap will lift out.JV

ChrisC
The Ford parts, supplied via Ford main dealer, using part numbers from the originals supplied by CC in my kit, are now 42mm both sides.
7 wonders of the world
Interesting as I replaced both of mine with new Ford items during my recent enforced rebuild and there are 41mm......
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted November 22, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted November 22, 2021 Doubly strange as one year ago I replaced the hub nuts after the diff re fit & they are 41mm.I know a lot can change in a year ?
John Vine
I asked CC Parts whether a 41mm socket still fitted the nuts they supply, and they replied:"No, these are 42mm actually which is quite annoying, cannot get 41 anymore."JV
CtrMint
Having just replaced mine as part of my diff replacement process, I can confirm they've changed to 42mm, they are also slightly deeper than the 41mm too.

SM25T
Original front hub nut was tiny, later upgrade stub axle has a bigger nut, but nothing like rears !
John Vine
IIRC, the original front hub nut was 1/2" UNF (3/4" AF spanner or socket). The nut for the upgraded stub axle is 34mm.JV

SM25T
I think around 2003-4. Little original one has a round dust cap over nut. Larger one has sealed bearings and no dust cap. Easy to tell by looking at your car.
Neil220
ThanksSafe to say my 1996 Supersport will be 1/2", no need to buy a 31mm socket as well as a 41mm one!
