Pendennis
Looking for yet another new battery, I seem to struggle to get a year out the Red top 15, the last two leak when laid on their side. Can anyone offer a decent alternative?
Mankee
Hi Ian. I've just slapped one of these on my car to shed another 5+kgs:http://www.allbatteries.co.uk/motorcycle-battery-lithium-ytx14-bs-12v-14ah-hjx14-mot156.htmlI've not properly tested it out though. It starts the car fine, charges fine and doesn't seem to lose charge, but I've only had it a few weeks. They are supposed to lose next to nothing if left with no parasitic drain, so I'm going to see how I get on without an expensive dedicated charger. But at £85, you could probably put a new one on each year anyway!
Jonathan Kay
Very happy with my Powervamp PVR25. It lives on a conditioning charger all the time the 7 is in the garage.Discussion of the PVR22. I made a fruitless attempt to develop a Bulk Buy.Jonathan
Pendennis
Wow Makee, 1.2kg!Jonathan, where did you buy your Powervamp?
Mankee
I weighed it at 902g!
Jonathan Kay
... where did you buy your Powervamp? At a parts shop in Aylesbury: I needed it the same day rather than at the lowest price! I found them through the Powervamp web site, but IIRC there was a dance about what was Odyssey and what was Powervamp. But the discussion about the PVR22 was triggered by their eBay shop.Jonathan
Pendennis
Thanks guys.Karting batteries have become very light, those Lithium ion type must be the same family. Very interesting, is the cranking power good enough for a high compression 2L though???
Jonathan Kay
Yes, do they give a nominal cranking current, and what do they say about ambient temperature? It seems unlikely at that price, but does it have a built-in management system?ThanksJonathan
Mankee
What's the CCA of the original Banner as well as Powervamp, Odyssey et al.? From memory, that Skyrich is 250-280 CCA. No idea how that compares, but it'll be interesting to see if it'll still start after the winter.Built-in battery management system?! It's got a test button and three LEDs to tell you the state of the battery, if that's what you mean!
Jonathan Kay
Thanks. The manufacturer's claim for the PVR25 is: 1800 peak amps 680 amps cranking current for 5 seconds 220 amps CCA 30 seconds to 7.2v @ - 18c Jonathan
Pendennis
Varley website is not specific at all regarding cranking for the Red top 15, suspect it's about 220.They now do lithium battery Li-5 which looks another good option, but suspect I need a mortgage to buy one
7 wonders of the world
Ian, you can deal direct with Ed Roller @ Powervamp who offers a decent club discount on the battery and mount bracket too, if I new where the deals section was on this new site I try and do a linky......... Mankee
Just a thought, Ian. Does it have to be a racy/trick/expensive/overpriced lightweight battery? If not, I've been using a Yuasa (Ultramax/RMD25-alike) for the past few years with no issues, even when I completely flattened it as my alternator packed up one day. It's about 5.7kgs, you can fit it in any orientation and about £40 from memory. I have my old one kicking around somewhere, so I can launch it in the post if you want to try it out. Rob Walker
Ian, Ed roller /PowerVamp recomended a Jet Ski battery for my 7. It was a Hawker Odessey PC865 or 685 IIRC he said it was just as rugidly built but does not have the racey red colour scheme and half the price of the race battery , lasted 6 years then I sold the car with it still going strong. Jonathan Kay
I have never been able to understand the branding strategy between "Powervamp", "Odyssey" and "Hawker". There is now a "Clubsport" page of products devoted to the PVR22 and a "Racing" page. The PVR22 stil looks like a good cheap option for most 7s. (There was very little interest in a Bulk Buy.)Jonathan
