Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted October 30, 2014 Area Representative Share Posted October 30, 2014 Not on the Seven (those will be riveted) but on the 21.Rather than riviting them to the GRP body, I was wondering if I might use rubber nuts and M3 countersunk bolts to fix the studs. The only problem I can see is whether there is sufficient clearance inside for the mushroom created when fixing the button. The specific use is for the rear edge of the hood. The objective is to allow the hood to be removable, so that I can still get to the fuel pump under the "parcel shelf" of the 21 AND to use studs, so that I can fix the hood cover better. The current arrangement is a crush/friction fit for the cover between body and boot lid.The nuts should stay in place if I have to undo the hood. Member Jonathan Kay Posted October 30, 2014 Member Share Posted October 30, 2014 You've got the point about clearance already. I use rubber nuts/ well nuts to hold bits like the jack and tools in place in the engine bay. Some of them come out when I remove the screw. You could glue them in place.Jonathan
6speedmanual
And if you do use wellnuts (rubber t nuts) make sure the threads are protected with a grease or waxoyl. If the screw seizes in the well nut they can be real bu99er to get out if you cannot access the back of the nut.Peter

Ian Mackenzie
What about countersunk rivnuts, they can give a good finish, I n had them on my Megablade.Cheers Ian
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted October 30, 2014 Author Area Representative Share Posted October 30, 2014 Hi Ian The fixing isn't the issue, particularly. I'd prefer to use rubber nuts to duck round the risk of cracking the GRP. The focus of my concern is the space between button and stud. After all Caterham sell rivets which fit, not all rivets are sufficiently shallow for the button to snap on properly.
Ian Mackenzie
Hi thereAnother option if the aim is to reduce cracking would be peel rivets as they spreed the load more.CheersIan
