captain chaos
Can anyone remember ,or has anyone measured how much oil is put into a 6spd gearbox to bring it up to the right level? Thanks
wag
More than a litre less than they tell you in the manual, maybe about 2.75l.
captain chaos
That's interesting... I rang Caterham, they said "not sure" and they guessed at 1.9L, but suggested I ask a friend! Wag, I must say, when I emptied it, it didn't look like 2.75 came out. Is that what the manual says? cheers
Andrew Dent
ISTR buying 6 x 0.5l bottles of chip fat to stick in the thing. Always over flowed on the last one. Andrew 4 wheels on my
Rob Walker
1.5L if its absolutely empty, if its a refill without having been drained off the car I would recon on 1.4L
Grim Reaper
The Owner's Manual says "5/6 speed.....1.9 litres" Why the difference? Is it prone to spitting the rest out?
captain chaos
Thanks. I thought it was about 1.5L but wanted confirmation. I've put a fitting on the top cover which allows me to fill the gearbox without having to muck about with the side plug. However, using this method does mean I have to put the right amount in. Steve-B
i have a 1.8K vhpd, with a 6 speed box and a dry sump. i see the hoses going to the gearbox. so when i change the oil for the engine do i need to also enpty and refil the gearbox, or will it come out via the drain hole? i was told 2L but never seem to put in, or drain out more than about 1.5L Steve Metalic Black SV-VHPD click here to see our pictures.... captain chaos
w1scb, "You see the hoses going to the gearbox"...are u refering to the breather? Anyway, I think we agree it's about 1.5L I need to put back in.
Steve-B
i'm referring to the metal braided hoses about 1" in size running down the right side of the engine below the intake manifolds Steve Metalic Black SV-VHPD click here to see our pictures.... Johnty Lyons
These are not going to the Gearbox but to the Bell Housing dry sump tank [ just a convenient place to store the engine oil ]Absolutly nought to do with 6speed gearbox oil. The flat plate on top of the 6 speed can easily be removed takes about 7 mins, easier than jacking up car and fiddling with filler plug and squirty bottles to ingress oil. With it off you can easily see the filler plug just pour in oil till it come up to bottom of plug its a piece of p***. jj N.I. L7C AO. Membership No.3927. Steve-B
ok, that's a relief. FWIW i unscrew the top of the 6speed tube that holds the dipstick and look down with a small torch to see what is the same view then. thanks johnty, see you on LtL2003 soon Steve Metalic Black SV-VHPD click here to see our pictures....
