FramerateUK
The gear knob on my 7 was quite pitted and scratched when I bought it, I've thought about replacing it for a new one, but then thought I might be able to polish it up (with the same metal polish I intend to use on the exhaust). Has anyone tried this? It looks like it's got a lacquer on it at the moment too, I have no problem removing it and just leaving it bare, or applying another coat. (I did a search but couldn't find any info on this!).

FramerateUK
I was careful with my search.... I learnt a valuable lesson when looking for the location of a nearby pub called "The Black Cock"
simonpa
If it is the standard ali knob, shaped like a hot air balloon, then it is anodised and won't polish off. You would probably need to blast or sand/emery paper it off. I tried paint remover on an old one I have and it didn't touch it.
simonpa
ooh - just googled 'anodising removal) and the stuff in here looks worth a try: http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/articles/polishing/ I haven't tried caustic soda (oven cleaner/drain unblocker), may try that on mine. Ozzy
I did see a video once, where a girl was doing a very fine job of polishing the gear knob in a car. She wasn't using her hands though 😳

Birkin S3 ZA.
Take it off and find a bolt the same thread size, then use a drill or lathe and give it a good polish with 800 wet and dry. That will remove the coating and then with metal polish. Chris.
Mrp
Interesting I tried when I polished the exhaust can, will try again after reading this. Mrp
FramerateUK
Thanks all. I've bought some contoured sanding pads so I'll give it a go. Worst comes to worst I'll just buy a replacement!
Alaskossie
I have an "oblong" Momo gear stick knob -- shaped a bit like the handle of a woodworking chisel. It was originally chrome-plated over aluminium, but I had the chrome stripped off, and then I polished the aluminium. Then a friend machined a small round recess in the top, and I epoxied in a Lotus-emblem lapel pin. It looks rather nice, and works well, also.
