ScoobyJ
HI, i have a CSR260 which suddenly started running rough, I think it is only running on 2 x cylinders, I pulled the coil off on cylinders 1 and 2 and no difference in engine running but pulling either 3 or 4 off the engine dies, i suspect it is the coil loom but does any one have any input? thanks
geko
Hi, a new coil loom is worth to try: Link I had troubles with the Ford COPs used for the CSR 2.3 Duratec before I switched over to (4 wire) VW COPs and Haltech ECU. Failed ignition on two cylinders at the same time may point the problems with the MBE ECU. Hanns Per have similare troubles: CSR owner Forum Edited by - geko on 13 Sep 2014 18:21:
John Vine
I'm not familiar with the 2.3 motor, but assuming the coils and wiring are the same as the R400D, this thread may give you some pointers. As for identifying a non-firing cylinder, can you detect a temperature difference when you touch (v lightly) each primary in turn? JV
ScoobyJ
Thanks guys i will try a new loom first and see if it cures the problem, re feeling the temperature by touching the primary lightly, i'm not sure what you mean by primary, do you mean the top of the coil? John Vine
The primary (one of four) is the run of exhaust pipe from the cylinder head, through the hole in the bodywork, and down to the collector. They can get very hot (if the cylinder is firing!). JV
ScoobyJ
Thanks JV i will have a look tomorrow and let you know the outcome
Stationary M25 Traveller
Careful when sensing temperatures on primaries 😳 Prefer to use a non-contact laser thermometer rather than fingers !!
ScoobyJ
HI, definitely not firing on cylinders 1 and 2, no heat at all in the manifold checked the coil loom and all looks ok. any ideas?
geko
Hi, change coils 3 & 4 with 1 & 2 and you will see if the coils/COPs are the problem. Edited by - geko on 14 Sep 2014 15:05:
ScoobyJ
Hi, swapped coils 1/2 to position 3/4 and still 1/2 cylinders not firing,
geko
Hi, that´s bad. Connectors - loom - (ignition modul, don´t know if present) - cables - ECU...from cheap to expensive. Edited by - geko on 14 Sep 2014 16:17:
John Vine
Just a thought... What roller barrels do you have? One-piece or two? If the latter, it's possible the linkage between the two is faulty/loose. Check whether the front RB opens in sync with the rear. JV
ScoobyJ
Hi yes 2 part barrel, they do move in tandem. thanks for all your help thus far
tbird
very unlikely, but have you checked for a spark at 1/2, be a hell of a coincidence but could two plugs have broken down, maybe swap plugs 1/2 for 3/4 Are plugs 1/2 wet when you take them out, just in case it is a fuelling problem, just a stab in the dark Tim Edited by - tbird on 14 Sep 2014 18:19:
ScoobyJ
Thanks Tim, i have had all plugs out and cleaned, placed back in random order, still no joy on 1-
tbird
oh dear, was just hoping for the last cheap option, have you checked for spark as well Tim

ScoobyJ
Hi with the very helpful chaps at Caterham, they found a broken return spring on the throttle barrels, getting sorted now. Thanks for all your input
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 15, 2014 Member Share Posted September 15, 2014 Glad you've found it. Would that be expected to cause cold exhaust piping from those cylinders once it's running? Thanks Jonathan
ScoobyJ
When I had it idling definitely cold exhaust so must be mixture, I will ask the mechanic when he has finished
