Grandmaster Flatcap
I want to but some heat shrink off Etat and it comes in a variety of sizes. How do I know what size to order? Is 4mm heat shrink the size before heat is applied? If so, how much does this stuff shrink? Ta,
Jonathan Kay
No idea which way round that is labelled. Can you link to the item? I buy it in assorted colours and sizes. Jonathan

Jonathan Kay
I'd guess it' "before". Ask them? Jonathan
Dr Slotter
The vast majority of heatshrink has a shrink ratio of either 2:1 or 3:1. Depends what it is made of.

Grubbster
If you want to see it before you choose and if you've got a Toolstation nearby you can pick it up quite cheaply from them here or at Maplins.

OliverSedlacek
It's the before size. Most heatshrink is 2:1 but you can also get 3:
Myles
What's the preferred technique for sealing a chunky connection that has fairly-modest wires leading to it? E.g. Some kind of inline component - or maybe just a bodge of stacked spade connectors? Heatshrink big enough to contain the component/bodged connector generally won't be able to shrink down enough onto the wires themselves. I did have to bodge something at the weekend this way (and kinda crimped the ends of the heatshrink with pliers) but also have some legitimate challenges along these lines! brookside2004
I've had various challenges of this type, usually around test leads. The major risk is usually around flexing of the wire at the point closest to the joint. In most cases a small in-line box or housing of some description, particularly if it has it's own cable clamp is the best solution. Failing that I have been successful using soldered or spade joints, protecting them with multiple layers of heat-shrink of gradually increased diameter to a significant point beyond the joint, thus providing support to the delicate cables. Ian B
Adhesive lined heatshrink 'clamped' at the ends, or a proper box with sleeved grommets and heatshrink over the grommet sleeve.
