airbox

It's just possible - OK, extremely likely - that I have misunderstood the purpose of an airbox, can anyone advise ?

- what is is for ?

- what does it do to performance?

- what does it do for noise ?

- any other pros/cons

The main purpose of the R500 Revier (SP?) airbox is to reduce the drive by noise level . It does this well . The box also takes in air from the front of the car which *should* reach the engine cooler than drawing from within the bonet , but the air has to pass through long warm pipes before reaching a relativly small capacity box on the ends of the trumpets ( dictated by the bonet line ) . The downside to the R500 system is , the loss of power - 10% has been spoken of ! . And the cost .

 

If we then consider all other airboxes - F1 , Bikes , Touring cars , S1600 etc etc , then their main purpose is to draw in cold air ( -3% bhp for every 10C rise in temp ), there is much talk of ram effect , but even the F1 boys only experience a few millibars of increased pressure at 150mph+ , then you also have to have an ECU that can compensate . The air box can also be shaped to enhance pulse tuning , this is common on superbikes .

The Reverie airbox in standard fitment on the Caterham is very good at sucking up cement from stray bags left lying in the road!!!

 

Unless my R500 was making 265 bhp out of the box, the airbox did not rob 10% power. It made 230bhp with the airbox on.
