Guest
Hi I am trying to fit the rear brakes onto the uprights. Once the pads are in there is not enough clearance to slide them over the disc - it is as if the brakes are on or engaged. (The brake piston is protruding) Any pointers gratefully received. Thanks Will
Roadsport06
You need to rewind the pistons. Do a search on here. The rewind tool can be hand for about £15 and Myles' site will help too here
Ivaan
Inside the caliper, behind the piston, is a coarse threaded rod with a rotating bush. As the piston pushes out, the bush works up the rod and prevents it from returning. It's part of the handbrake mechanism. To get the piston to retract back into the caliper, it needs to be rotated as it's pushed in, winding the bush back down the rod. Hence the need for the rewind tool. Guest
Thanks everyone....another trip to halfords....any excuse!
Roadsport06
Halfords will no doubt be expensive. Not known as Halfrauds for nothing. I brought mine from machine mart for about £10 a few years ago.
Roadsport06
I should add that you can get left or right handed threaded wind back tools. I think our cars are right handed. Machine mart have them for £12 here. Halfords are probably triple that.
Grubbster
I found that the 2 pronged spanner for changing cutting discs on my angle grinder worked as a wind back tool perfectly!
Markiebabes
May sound stupid but have you slackened off the handbrake cable ?
Guest
Thanks, I have yet to attach the handbrake cable so I guess that can't be the problem? The brakes are straight out of the box. The right side is fine but for some reason the left on has the piston extended
Guest
When I did mine I also had to turn the cylinder so that the notches in the pads lined up with the slots in the cylinder. Picture here
pugwash
Took mine to the local Ford garage who wound them back for me.

Roger Ford
Also Screwfix for £19.99 if you have a local one, but not a Machine Mart.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted June 29, 2014 Member Share Posted June 29, 2014 Good point, I often forget about Screwfix for mechanical things other than domestic DIY. And they have a lot more stores than Machine Mart. Jonathan
