Rear Lights Shorting?

Pre MOT check finds LHS indicator going on when the brakes are applied, but not vice versa, sides lights etc work. Sometime ago I took the entire assembly off, is it possible that I reinserted the wires into the connectors in the wrong order? The colours on the wires (1996) are so faded I cannot swear they are matching, or is this a short?

Front and rear indicators both coming on with the brake?

 

Does removing the brake light bulbs stop it happening?

 

And indicators and hazard warning all work correctly on their own?

Check the earth by running a wire from the metal part of the light unit directly to the chassis or battery negative. Bet that solves the problem.

Just the rear indicator coming on with the brake, indicators work perfectly on their own as do hazards

 

Removing the brake light bulb did not make a difference

So that leaves crossed wires in the connectors?

Yes. Crossed wires or maybe one of your bulbs is not seated correctly in the housing (it that makes sense)

How many faults are there that can switch on the rear but not the front indicator when they both work correctly on their own switch? (Assuming there are no LEDs or other diodes involved.)

 

There's that effect when the adjacent bulb acts as the earth.

 

I'd read that thread, check all the wiring, continuity in the lamp holders and the earth resistances.

Thanks all, I found it....... I had miss fed the wires back into the connectors. Doh!
