Andrew Walker
I have a Race Technologies battery conditioner which says on it "Warning, only use on lead acid battery" and it has output of 12v 1.4 amps. Does the Varley Red Top qualify as a 'lead acid' battery? Probably a stupid question, but what made me have a doubt is that it is gel filled. 😬
Myles
No, it's not lead-acid. Powervamp sorted me out with a specific multi-stage charger for this type of battery. This battery-type has great benefits, but does need to be treated correctly (no parasitic loads and appropriate charging - or trickle if you do have parasitic loads)
Andrew Walker
Thanks for that Myles. I should have asked the question before soldering a male socket to the wrong trickle charger!! 🙆🏻 I'll look to order one - hopefully with socket plug already attached. Andrew Walker
Myles - are you sure about the Varley Red Top, as looking at their web site, it says that the battery is lead-acid? So now I am confused
Roger Ford
Quoting Myles: No, it's not lead-acid. What is it then? I'd be most surprised if it wasn't. It might have the acid in the form of a gel, or absorbed in fibreglass, but the basic technology is almost certainly lead/acid.

Absorbed glass mat batteries from Wikipedia. (The acid isn't absorbed into the glass fibres, it just likes to keep the mats wet.) Gel batteries from Wikipedia. Myles
I stand corrected. Actually, I'm still in bed, but I'll stand corrected later...
