Varley Red Top 25 charging

I have a Race Technologies battery conditioner which says on it "Warning, only use on lead acid battery" and it has output of 12v 1.4 amps.

Does the Varley Red Top qualify as a 'lead acid' battery? Probably a stupid question, but what made me have a doubt is that it is gel filled.

No, it's not lead-acid.

Powervamp *thumbup* sorted me out with a specific multi-stage charger for this type of battery. This battery-type has great benefits, but does need to be treated correctly (no parasitic loads and appropriate charging - or trickle if you do have parasitic loads)

What is it then? I'd be most surprised if it wasn't. It might have the acid in the form of a gel, or absorbed in fibreglass, but the basic technology is almost certainly lead/acid.

This page has a link to the Varley technical sheet which describes them as lead-acid.

Absorbed glass mat batteries from Wikipedia. (The acid isn't absorbed into the glass fibres, it just likes to keep the mats wet.)

Gel batteries from Wikipedia.
