Peter Mears
After a rad repair I have flushed out the cooling system and drained. It looks like the Zetec took about 5l of water. Should it be about 50/50 coolant and water and what colour do I use. I was asked on another car whether it had red or green, tricky question for a guy with partial colour blindness 😬 For what its worth I think its green coolant that was in there. DJ.
Modern Ford engines use the Pink OAT antifreeze. I was sold Comma G30 Xtreme ready mixed coolant by caterham for my Sigma car. Duncan
Hodsonpe
Having still got the copper radiator I went for the Comma G48 in mine. I did use the G30 for about a year but a read up on types and problems have made me change after the rad repair. Paul.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 31, 2014 Member Share Posted May 31, 2014 *arrowup*How does the presence of copper affect the choice? Thanks Jonathan
Q Catcher
They say you shouldn't use (red) OAT anti-freeze if the car has silicone hoses; but OK if rubber hoses.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 31, 2014 Member Share Posted May 31, 2014 *arrowup*Yes, that's widely asserted. There was a specific problem reported with GM blocks at one time. Apparently there's a statement from SFS on their Facebook page which says it isn't a problem with their hoses. But then not all silicone hoses are chemically identical. I would guess that there are lots of cars, and probably lots of 7s, with silicone hoses full of OAT coolant and we don't hear of any associated problems. Molecular--Bob
Halfords on shelf guide saysthe pink stuff for a blacktop, possibly the green for the earlier silver top, but didn't check as i was looking for coolant for a black top.
Peter Mears
Thanks all, I will go with the green as I am sure thats what was in there before and its a silver top from 2001. Back on the road tomorrow 😬
