Front hub split pin size

Dear Blatchat collective,

 

Does anyone know the diameter and length of the split pin that passes through the front axle and locks the castle nut on the Caterham front uprated hubs/axle.

 

When i took my car apart the old ones were mangled beyond re-use and like a muppet i through them out.

 

Caterham Cars parts dept don't sell them, and they didn't know the size!

Is it different on the uprated hubs?

 

There's a thread titled "Front Hub Split Pin size". If they're the same that will help, if they're not the suggested tactical solution should still work...

Firstly, I mainly reuse them.

 

But in my racing spares box, I have 5/32" x 2" - which is 4mm x 50mm ish.

And to confirm, that's for uprated hubs. The old ones don't last very long on race cars....

Hi Chris. I don't know if standard and uprated hubs share the same split pin, but Caterham Parts do list some pins here.

 

I bought four of the same dimensions last year for my standard hubs from this eBay auction. I'm upgrading my hubs soon, so if I can dig out my two spare split pins, let me have your address and I'll whack them in the post to you.

I personally don't reuse them, simply coz that's what my father taught me as good practice! However, I suspect the risk of fatigue with reuse is probably extremely small, but given the cost, why take a risk? Besides, once they have been bent then straightened surely they must be a pain to re-insert?

Halfords do mini boxes of mixed sizes - one will be close enough. Electricians side cutters to trim to length.

I use 2.5" x 3/16" (4.8mm) ones on my uprated stub axles.
