Stoff Posted May 22, 2014 Share Posted May 22, 2014 Just changed the heater matrix and think I may have an airlock somewhere but am not sure. Symptoms: New heater gets hot Pipe to top of radiator gets hot Top of radiator gets hot However.... Bottom of radiator cold Pipe out of bottom of radiator cold and the radiator fan refuses to cut in. Temp gauge reading +100 before I wimped out as I got a bit of a fountain out of the expansion bottle when I revved the engine. Normally fan cuts in around 90and out again at around 80. If I short the temp switch on the radiator the fan will run so fuse OK. Classic symptoms of air lock or worrying about nothing ? Any help/thoughts would be well received. Thanks. The behaviour of the fan might be the same problem but it might be something different. When were you last sure it was working OK? I'd check the sensor in a pan with a thermometer to avoid confusion. Domus Posted May 22, 2014 Share Posted May 22, 2014 Classic symptoms of thermostat not opening. As you have done some work on the cooling system and assume all was well before, I guess there is air in the engine block. Air will not transmit heat to the stat so the stat "thinks" the engine is too cool. Remove stat and drill a 3mm hole at the top of the flange, this should allow the trapped air to escape. And /or I had a similar experience on my Sigma engined car I solved it by getting the engine just above the usual stat opening temp and driving the car down the drive and jumping on the brake pedal, then reversing and slamming on. This shunting moved the air, allowed the coolant to touch the stat and Bob's your five new p.
