CharlesElliott
Anyone tried, or thought about using four of these?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 4, 2014 Member Share Posted May 4, 2014 ... is that because they claim to have "auto-hold", which was the unresolved issue in this thread? Jonathan
CharlesElliott
It's not auto hold so much as not requiring a tap to startup and then only displaying one weight which is the case with bathroom scales.

7 wonders of the world
as said above many digital units require you to get off and get back on to display weight where as conventional analogue version display live as you make adjustments. I use 8 normal bathroom scales with thick ply bridge plates so there 2 scales per wheel, simple and repeatable
Roger Ford
A penny cheaper on Amazon with some reviews.
Mankee
There's another sort on eBay that's slightly cheaper with a capacity of 150kgs and 0.05kg resolution or switchable to 300kgs and 0.1kg resolution, which should be fine for our needs. About £35 plus £9 postage or £162-odd for a set of four with various discounts. Anyone in Suffolk/Essex want to go halves or even quarters? Don't think I can justify that much money for the amount of times I need to weigh or weight my car.
Ray Pearce
*arrowup* But the one on Amazon comes in Dark Walnut with an integral cupboard Edited by - Ray Pearce on 5 May 2014 08:38:

Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 5, 2014 Member Share Posted May 5, 2014 *arrowup*Shirley it would have to be four people, divided into pairs, with each member of a pair sharing the cost equally... Jonathan

elie boone
Longacre economy scales are 1259$ direct from the USA but you will need to pay import taxes, that is what I did.

Mankee
Gerry, I'll look into it a bit more and will give you a buzz. Probably go for four of the scales linked by Charles and see if they can do a deal if I go and pick them up arm with cold hard cash.
Roger Ford
Bulk buy?
Mankee
Have asked how much for several sets and will report back when I hear from them. If there's interest, can you post here for an idea of numbers. Ta.

Mankee
Just had a reply from the guys who sell the scales linked in the original post by Charles, i.e. these ones. Can't pick them up in person because of distribution and order picking etc., but here goes: 4pcs = £184.99 8pcs = £359.99 12pcs =£524.99 16pcs =£689.99 20pcs = £855.99 All the above prices include VAT and shipping to ONE address. So there is a little bit of a saving overall, but not a huge amount. Plus if you aren't local to me (or whoever arranges the group buy) and can't arrange GONADS or other form of getting the scales to you, then you'll need to get them shipped, which negates the saving. Any thoughts?

Mankee
Another reply, this time for these scales: 4 GBP160 8 GBP320 12 GBP468 16 GBP620 20 GBP760 All including delivery to one address.
andy couchman
Interesting and interested. The latter scales wouldn't quite work for me as my car weighs around 600kgs with me on board but weight distribution is about 46/54 so the back end would be just over their limit. Mankee
the latter scales are switchable so you can weigh 300kgs per corner with 0.1kg resolution. Could work for cars like Elises, early MX5s, VX220s, heavier kit cars and stuff like that, if their weights fit within the weighing limits. andy couchman
Sounds perfect and it would be possible to use the 0-150 scale on the front and 0-300 on the rear. Count me in for a possible bulk buy Mankee! Andy
Fishy Dave
Worth checking that they will be ok with the lateral loads that can be experienced when lowering a car down on to the scales. I used 8x bathroom scales for some years with some success but one by one they started to fail due to this sideways load. In the end I bought a second hand set of car scales which were not cheap. These could be a good solution if suitable.
Mankee
Already thought about that, Dave. I've been using patio slabs as roll-on, roll-off platforms and, also, someone in the archives suggested using supermarket carrier bags as turn plates, which actually works rather well!
