Got to thinking that if I broke something it could be an expensive bit of fun. What am I liable to break on the car if this was done regularly? Car is 155 BHP crossflow running a Ford LSD'd live axle (new). Presently on 32r's (slippy on a damp road). ONLY SE7EN IN THE OUTER HEBRIDES! If you go round and round anticlockwise your engine will cough and splutter as the centrifugal force stops the carbs from getting fuel through. Straighten up and it will disappear. Peter Carmichael Posted December 27, 2002 Share Posted December 27, 2002 As soon as there is any significant difference in speed of the two wheels across the differential, a lot of energy gets dumped into the diff oil. This will eventually overheat and boil, so don't do it for too long. You are also running the engine at quite high power at standstill (no airflow), so the car can overheat. The starting shock of dumping the clutch to break traction can cause problems up the drivetrain, especially as the drivetrain loads are highest in first gear. If you want to keep things cheap, do it in the wet and not the dry. Don't hit a wall while donutting. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Must say I was most concerned about doing some damage to the rear axle/diff. I take it the Ford (Escort) axle with LSD is pretty robust though? Nigel Riches Posted December 28, 2002 Share Posted December 28, 2002 Be aware of the sudden loading of the axle mountings on the frame of the car, wouldn't want one of these to let go, and have the axle decide it's off some other direction than the rest of the vehicle. My "A" frame bracket broke off the axle case, at low speed, real scary moment, so have some mechanical sympathy for the car, go easy on it, Nigel.
