Chocolate Halfshafts?

Recommended Posts

Would anyone with suitable boffin credentials be able to confirm, for the Ital axle;

1. The exact material spec' that they are made of;

2. The approximate length of the shaft

3. The rigidity modulus of the material if possible

Many Thanks

In the Marina days they used to made from "EN8" which is a medium carbon steel possibly in an R condition. The current equivalent is 080M20.

I think the final production series when they were manufactrued at Canley used EN43 but if you want to improve strength and have shafts made you could try EN24T.

The "Young's Modulus" (E) of all carbon steels is nominally 207GPa. You can't significantly change modulus by heat treatment either so the twist in the shaft will always be identical for a given torque, if you don't change length or diameter, regardless of the composition of steel that is used.

Obviously the strength can be changed but EN24T is probably as far as you want to go without reducing the ductility of the steel too much.

Don't recall the length.
