Although if it seems to not have posted, it'll probably turn up posted half-dozen-times. That's what happens to me. If the noise is different (more drum-like nearer the ground), then the post is rotten at the centre (from the wicking of water up from the water table), and should not be used to hang a heavy gate. If the test does show this but the post has been concreted in then 3 stays can be run 120 degrees apart, at an angle of 45 degrees from post and ground.
