Heskyboy
Stupid point I know, but what does the percentage quoted on the steering rack relate to? Cheers in anticipation.
Lawrence_Z
It relates to the gearing of the old triumph based racks of the flared wing cars Cycle wing cars were given a rack with stops to prevent the wings hitting the sides on full lock. theses were termed 8% , which was an apparent higher ratio, however as ratio is measured lock to lock, the 8% was in fact just a reduction in lock. The 22% is a higher geared race rack. HTH Lawrence
Heskyboy
Thanks Lawrence, So is the 22% still relative to the old Triumph or does it reflect an actual formula? R996 VCH
scooby dooby doo
it boils down to 8% being about 2.2 turns lock to lock and 22% being about 1.8 turns. HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU

mav
my 8% is less than 2 turns lock to lock
Lawrence_Z
I beleive the percentage is an increase in gearing based on the original value measured at the steering wheel. So no, it isn't a formula as such I think maybe Hoopy has details of the rack and the 2 pinions if you want to work it out Hoopy???? J.R.
Hoopy Sounds like you dont throw anything away either! Is your "apparently" undamaged rack the (allegedly) 22% one? My car has a good pinion but slightly bent rack (was a lot bent before much straightening) which I have to run with the damper slack to avoid stiffness on RH lock. Now running A032R's It is very twitchy on bumpy roads and I want to tighten the damper but cant. Can you help?
scooby dooby doo
yup - the "second hand" bits are 22%. I'm happy to let you have it on the basis that you only pay if it checks out as undamaged, otherwise just bin it. Visually you can see that one tooth on the rack bar is slightly more worn than the others - compared to the pinion where one tooth is displaced by almost its entire thickness. ☹️ HOOPY 500 kg R706KGU
CHRIS CLARK
Ellie. Amount of turns is dependant on cycle or proper Clamshell wings as cycles are lock limited to stop body work strike (on std/narrow track units)
