Guest
Hi all, The front suspension wishbones etc. on my 7 are looking like they need a bit of TLC where the odd spot of rust is forming around stone chips etc. I have been looking into paint to re-touch them with and have been recommended POR15. Is there any particular type that matches the existing Caterham black colour and finish please? The wishbones and other suspension / steering parts on my 2000 1.8 K VVC may have been gloss black when new but they are more of a dullish satin finish now! Generally, it's all in pretty good nick but I'm not sure whether to re-touch the rusty bits or give it all a fresh coat. Many thanks, Lee
CharlesElliott
Hammerite satin black is a good match.
Stationary M25 Traveller
That is the Smoothrite version of Hammerite.
Nigel R300
I put black electrical tape along the front edges of the wishbones to protect from stone chips and replace it when it looks tatty perhaps you could do this after painting to protect in the future
Area Representative Crudders Posted February 12, 2014 Area Representative Share Posted February 12, 2014 POR-15 is excellent but a bit on the glossy side. Flat it back and overcoat with VHT Barrel Paint though and you have a very good match for factory powder coat. That's what my front wishbones are wearing. Both paints bought from Frost Restoration. I haven't compared personally but POR-15 is reputed to be more resistant to chipping than Hammerite. Cruds
Ols
I used POR15 a while back and it seems pretty resilient [but as above, a bit shiny]. If you use it make sure you wear gloves. And a hat. And keep the cat out of the garage...
Stationary M25 Traveller
The black insulating tape is great and almost invisible on top of smoothrite satin black.
glasgow
I used hammrite satin black. Good sanding first then premier. I thought I was just doing a temporary repair but 3 years now and thousands of miles and still looks fine Ahmed
Gary Stone
May be it's time to have all the front suspension off & get it re powder coated. After doing that to mine last year I now put some electrical tape along the front edges as SM25T suggests. Helps the stone chips & is virtually un noticeable.
