abbot
Checkink over the car I found that the big nut on the end of the right hand side 1/2 shaft was loose to the point of significant play on the wheel. I torqued it up and the play disappeared. Is there a better way to ensure that the nut does not work loose again?
Stationary M25 Traveller
Is this a nyloc ? New nut if so. Or a bit of loctite.

CaterBram
I'm assuming that you've got a live axle, beaware that it could also be a failing wheel bearing.
abbot
Sorry, yes live axle. Bearings were replaced about year ago when i fitted new seals that were weeping
elie boone
The manual says 135 to 150Nm, if you don't want to replace the nut use loctite.
abbot
I think best [lan will be new nuts and lactate. Anyone know which grade of lactate is best?
Stationary M25 Traveller
I use a grade of Loctite that is not permanent. So ... it can be unscrewed with enough torque on the nut. So ... a medium strength. (The number 431 comes to mind ....will check it shortly)
Stationary M25 Traveller
The one I use is Loctite 243 medium strength Not 431 !

abbot
Just finished working on the rear end. What was very strange was that even after torqueing up the nut last time it had loosened significantly. So now fitted new nylon nuts, applied loctite 243 and torqued up to top limit155. The only slight worry is that the new nylon nuts are thicker than the old ones so the nylon ring is not completely down the thread. I hope the Loctite compensates for that. I have scratched a mark on shaft end to give an indication if nut moves.
