elie boone
Is the 1980's steering rack as used on the live axle based on the spitfire or the classic Mini steering rack ?
John Hughes
I believe it was from a Mini
Area Representative manningpaul Posted December 17, 2013 Area Representative Share Posted December 17, 2013 I also think it was Mini, but think maybe it was turned upside down from memory?
Klunk
I was told mine was a shortened left hand drive mini rack turned upside down....... I just fitted a later Caterham rack it was easier Edited by - Klunk on 17 Dec 2013 21:16:
OliverSedlacek
I recall that it was from a Metro and turned upside down
7TOM
Me not sure but if upside down then I assume it would need to be from a LHD vehicle 😶🌫️
elie boone
I drove a Fiesta LHD with a RHD steering rack for a gymcana, you must fully concentrate, in order of turning left you go right . I will have a go with a Mini steering rack then.
Stationary M25 Traveller
Bit like the bicycle with reversed steering. Very very difficult to win the prize to ride 10m without falling off.
OliverSedlacek
Remember that the sense of a rack switches according to whether it is ahead of the axle or behind it.
elie boone
True, the Mini is in fact on the "other" side compared to a Caterham
Phil B
Elie, LHD mini turned upside down as the track arms are behind the wheel centres. If your car is LHD you may need a RHD mini rack, if you see what I mean. I have a Caterham rack on my '85 car as it had been fitted by a previous owner. If you want it to look more "period" strip the paint off the caterham rack body, it'll soon take on a period patina! phil B
elie boone
😶🌫️ but given the price for a Mini steering rack i settle for one of those.
Klunk
Elie, Do double check the length of the rack before you buy. I'm sure it's a shortened one, and by that I mean the actual rack not the arms. Regards, Giles
elie boone
OK, so if anyone has the measurement by hand of a original Mini rack ?
Klunk
Might still have a mini rack in the garage so can check later if nobody else comes up trumps first
Englishmaninwales
Elie, The converted mini rack in early Caterhams also has lock limiting collars. Even still the turning circle is will be smaller than the current Titan made Caterham rack. The lock is a problem if you have cycle wings rather than flared wings, as the wings will hit the side skin. Malcolm
Klunk
Had a look for the rack but I must have got rid of it - sorry. Hopefully someone will be along shortly. Regards, Giles
