Guest
Hi just checking the specification of the correct gearbox oil for the 6 speed caterham box and any suggestions on purchase?

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted September 3, 2013 Leadership Team Share Posted September 3, 2013 Mine has Redline MTL .... but I'm probably going to swap it back to standard oil this winter 😳 Stu.
7 wonders of the world
Unless the oil has done really excessive mileage - which is unlikely in a 7 why would you want to downgrade 🤔 MTL's viscosity range is wider than the standard oil and the oil is a higher spec too. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted September 3, 2013 Leadership Team Share Posted September 3, 2013 There's been much discussion about MTL on here in the past and IIRC including mention of comments from one of the favoured gearbox repairers who hates MTL. All is not quite as straightforward as it initially appears. MTL is an excellent oil for competition use, improving gear changes and lubricating across a wide range temperatures and conditions, but reading between the lines I suspect that it is not the best for higher mileage in a road car. I stand to be proven wrong though! Stu.
Markiebabes
how often do you change it ? Mine (mtl ) is changed every couple of years 😬 at say 6000ish miles
Guest
Hi thanks for info. Sorry about delay on reply been on holaday so had patchy Internet. My 6 speed is very notchy so the Redline sounds intresting. Have been recomended 75W90 in a GL4 grade.
BBL
I don't understand why so many 7 owners use Redline's 70W80 GL4 grade MTL gear oil rather than their 75W90 GL4 grade MT-90 gear oil, as 75W90 GL4 is what Caterham recommend. But then, I have little understanding of the intricacies of petroleum-based lubricants and whatnot.
Jason Plato
many use MTL because it simply works very well. Shift is slicker, the tight change into second when cold is much improved and its proven in many, many Caterham gearboxes.
BBL
So I have read, but is it slicker, better, etc. as compared to MT-90 or are these posts as compared to some other brand of gear oil (as I suspect)?
