Nigel Meylan
My brake lights have sopped working. I've checked the bulbs and changed the fuse, but still nothing. Anyone got any ideas ?

Stationary M25 Traveller
Do a search for 'brake and switch' Procedure has been described many times. Just don't lose the spring when you prise the end cap off !
BBL
I replaced mine with a significantly more robust model, a Beck/Arnley 2010825. They were cheap, so I bought two. A suitable replacement should be inexpensive and relatively easy to locate if you take your existing one to your local automotive parts maerchant. Mort
A squirt of WD40 on the piston of the brake switch may be enough.
Stationary M25 Traveller
But not if the copper legs have splayed inside the switch and no longer touching the contacts !
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 21, 2013 Member Share Posted August 21, 2013 As above... but please confirm that the fuse wasn't blown. Jonathan
Bricol
If they have spread, -de-spread them and adjust it's position so it doesn't do it again. Mine did than about 10yrs ago . . . still works. Bri
Stationary M25 Traveller
If the fuse blows, it could be contact from the legs of the split pin on top of the clutch pedal or the reverse light connectors on the RL switch on the side of the gearbox. This shares the fuse ... so if reverse lights work with ignition on, fuse is ok.
CPS7
split pins per above post on mine!
Pierson
Nigel doesn't mention the vintage of his car so he may not have a switch on the brake pedal, but if his is an older car he'll have a pressure switch in-line with the brake circuit instead. These can fail reasonably frequently and can be swopped in and out without having to bleed the brakes (if you're quick with the swop...). Nigel? Domus
Strip and clean the old one and keep as a spare. You never know, you may be able to help out a fellow member on a Blat sometime
AntonyH
...as others has said, don't lose the spring when you take the end cap off. It will attempt to leave with extreme prejudice. When mine went, one of the contact legs had actually disintegrated - technically I could have folded up a new bit of metal but the (low) cost of a new switch made it not worthwhile.
