Chrome headlamps to matt black

Is this easy to do? Can the chrome be sanded and painted?

better to try and swap them in for sale

the only way to get a good finnish is to prime with a plastic primer first. this will give the paint a good grip the plastic primer is more flexible .or you can sand blast them this is the only way to get the chrome rough enough to hold the paint.

I flatted mine with a medium grade emery cloth (400 if I remember correct) then took them to our local powder coaters. £20 job - satin black, although they refer to it as matt. Looks just like the original equipment. No problems so far.

aren't the factory ones just powder coated on top of the chrome anyway?

Not the 2 sets I've got, although one of the (lemme see if I can get the right label) headlamp glass retaining rings is powdercoated over chrome. The others aren't.

ahh taht explains it, I have seen chrome under the black opn the retaining ring and assumed it was the same for the whole lamp unit.

It might well be, such is the apparent inconsistency.

 

Actually, being fair to them, the powder coating on my original headlamp bowls is quite good.
