simonray
Anyone upgrading to 6 speeds or something. I'm after the Quaiffe heavy duty needle roller bearing five speed to mate to a Zetec. Thanks Simon
NickD
I have a high-spec box for sale. Ratios are 2.39/1.54/1.21/1/0.87:1 with steel synchro rings and uprated countershaft. One season track day use from new and just overhauled. Currently about £1700 new, for sale at £800. NickD
Whether to use bronze or steel rings depends on how hard you change gear and on the engine revs used. The bronze rings can split if hard & fast changes are made, while the steel ones can apparently jam onto the gears if used too hard. My own experience is that the bronze rings chatter in their housings and are damaged by this vibration if revs much above 8000 are used, which is why I fitted the steel rings. I ran a steel set for 5 years on a previous box with no problems at all. Call me on the above number if you want to discuss further.
I reply to every thread
Quaiffes own tech info states that steel rings should be lapped after each outing. Not terribly practical if you're using the car on the road!
ECR
Not terribly practical for racing either !
simonray
I know that Quaiffe's catalogue says they MAY need a regular maintenance programme, but Nick Dinsmore tells me that in practice it hasn't been necessary. I hope so, 'cos I've bought his gearbox! Simon
NickD
Quaife's re-lapping after every race probably applies to those drivers who would also break the bronze ringes every race. As I said before, I have used these rings for 5 years and have only ever re-lapped them once, and even then only as a precaution.
