Roger Ford
Anyone know if I could replace my gearbox with one from a Capri 2.8i? This is for a 1600 Rover K-Series. It seems to have the right ratios, but don't know if the output shaft is likely to be the right length.
Mankee
From memory, you might need to take about 15mm off the input shaft, as it might bottom out and hit the end of the crank.
zetec
It dOes, but a T5 gearbox is best ( tvr used them all the time with rover v8)
Roger Ford
Thanks for those. T5 gearbox isn't an option as this is for a controlled race series.
myothercarsa2cv
Would a T5 even fit?
Allen Payne
Roger If you need a spare gearbox I've a standard one that came out of my k-series (1400). I'll need to check it as it's been in a box for the last X years
Roger Ford
Thanks, Alan, you should have Blatmail.
Englishmaninwales
Roger If you end up with an non Caterham supplied T9 gearbox you might need an extended gearbox nosepiece here. The standard Ford item is too short and can prevent the CRB from operating properly. Apologies for the shameless promotion of an item of mine in 'For Sale'!! Roger Ford
Thanks for the warning, but I presume I'll have one of those on my existing box? I'm currently just looking to see if it's cheaper to replace the box than have mine rebuilt (fifth gear has gone missing somehow).
Mankee
Not necessarily, Roger. Depends on the vintage of your box. My box was Caterham-supplied, pre-96, V6 ratios, long input shaft, but still had the V6 steel nose piece. It worked fine, but since I had the box out, I upgraded to an alloy nose piece with steel insert that was slightly longer for peace of mind. Much like what Malcolm is selling in fact! 5th gear is outside of the main casing. Is it worth pulling the tail shaft off to see what's gone amiss? Could be a simple and cheap repair, but I guess it would be nice to have a spare working box if you are racing.
elie boone
A T5 box does even fit into a live axle chassis, but you only have about a mm or 2 ether side of the box, you can file away some fins on the box to give a little bit more room. It stays too close to the chassis that the box will hit the chassis most of the times.
