Ignition/electrics problem

Tim Broyd

Recommended Posts

I've just put in a new battery (last one dead) and have tried starting up, but all I get is a red ignition light and nothing else, no lights, horn, etc. The battery's new but the car hasn't been used since around September. It's a 2006 Roadsport, Rover K.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

Here's what I'd do.

Disconnect, inspect and reconnect the wires to the battery terminals.

Disconnect, inspect and reconnect the earthing strap(s).

Measure the voltage across the battery terminals, and between the positive terminal and a remote earth.

Measure the feed voltage at the light switch.

Curiouser and curiouser. The battery's now charged - lights, horn, etc work, but not a peep from the ignition. It took a while of playing with the immobiliser buttons on the keyfob to get the red immobiliser light to go out. I've tried the ECU reset microswitch a few times, all to no avail.

Any ideas??

Ian - might you have 10 minutes when in the area later today?

Thanks all,

Thanks Ian.

Yes, ignition light is on, no fuel pump whirr. To be honest I'm beginning to think the new battery I bought yesterday is a dud - 12v turn in to 10v far too quickly given the low power that's being withdrawn.

Thanks all

I'm not so sure. If there's a short that just killed his brand new battery, it might well also kill bits of the jumper's electrics. If there may be a fault with the 7's Electrics better to just try again with a battery that is successfully working in another car to prove it's the batt at fault, not the wiring...

So then, it turned out to be no more than the Croydon branch of Jayar selling me a totally duff battery *mad* I lobbed a fresh one in this morning and it started straightaway, despite not being started since around October. Good car 🥰 bad Jayar *nono*

Thanks for the advice,

Tim
