Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 23, 2016 Member Share Posted September 23, 2016 If these (1, 2) are describing the same process then not too hard. But well within the ability of a local repairer: no need to send it away. Before and after photos, please.Jonathan

Grandmaster Flatcap
i went to see the car on the ramps on the way home from work. It is all a bit cramped in there, what with the 3&4 primaries, the alt', oil filter, engine mounts, Apollo sandwich plate and plumbing. The alt' was slackened off and free to move, but there is no way to get the cable plug off the back of the alt'. they also say they can't get to the back bolt on the alt' to remove it. They believe the only way to replace the cable is to remove primary 4 (then heating it with a torch and "scalloping" it with a hammer whilst it is off).i will phone them this morning with the alt' mod suggestion, and see how they take it. Mark Durrant
NigelI assume you mean No1 primary (they are normally numbered from the front). If the garage are unable/unwilling to make the alternator mod I would collect the car and either find a local member who can assist or take it to a Caterham specialist. I recommend you do not allow them to reshape the primary as this will have an adverse impact on the flow of the exhaust gases.

Graham Howard
NigelI did this mod on my car about 7 years ago and I think the alternator could be removed from underneath. I also have an Appolo tank. Very straightforward to take the alternator apart, no springs to fly out.You may to loosen the primaries from the engine to give yourself a bit more space.
