LesG
POBC; I was chatting to a friend today who let me know he has Quaiffe 6 speed sequential 'box for sale. It is the 'light' version, and at it's limits currently fitted to his Escort rally car, with vauxhall redtop motor, so he needs to upgrade and I got to thinking...... 😬 Does anyone else run one of these 'boxes in a S3 DD, with mid-power K Series, and if so, in conjunction with 3.92 final drive, do you happen to know your gear ratios? Also, what kind of value should I be putting on this, bearing in mind it'll probably need an overhaul before I fit it to my car? I'll obviously be selling my freshly-rebuilt type 9 (with long 1st) to part-fund the project, so would need a reference of value for that too please? As ever, all advice gratefully received.......... BSA
Well i have no idea of value but one thing is for sure if i was buying it i would send it back to the Factory for a complete rebuild, Those Mk 2 Escort Rally boys give their boxes a really hard time especially when they go over the jumps ! Edited by - BSA on 23 Feb 2013 14:25:
LesG
Well, over 230 views, and only one reply lol! Thank you BSA, I have a bloke locally who would be overhauling it (he's used to building WRC kit), I see from Quaife's website this sequential 'box would cost £5500 + vat new, so I'd have to work off that I guess. rj
As said: Send it back to Q for a rebuild. Count that in. Personally I wouldn't touch it. I'm afraid buying a second hand box can easily become more expensive than "just" paying for a brand new.
paul cardy
Hi Les Well you have shamed me into posting, not sure what model Quaife box you are looking at but i have been running the G60 as fitted to the latest R500, mine has the straight cut gears although i am told there is a helical gear set avalible. The box is on the back of a Scholar built 2L Duratec with 250 bhp and i am running the 3.92 final drive. From my perspective using the car for both road and hillclimbs its spot on, flat changes on the up shifts and clutch on the down, the change can be a bit more tricky when just driving slowly but I have improved the technique with use. With all straight cut gearboxes its a bit noisy but its adds to the whole experience !! Quaife would be the best people to advise on the ratios, but i have seen several of these boxes at Road & Race for rebuilds, i know they have lots of experience with these so will be worth giving them a call 01959 525105, good guys in my experience. I have no problems with reliability but i dont do many miles so its mayby not a true test , the only mod i am aware of is the top breather which seems to allow oil to escape as the design is just a straight pipe with no baffle inside. ( easy Fix ) Price wise i have seen a couple of G60 come up for sale around 4.5K but its not often. Hope this helps, drop me a mail if you want to have a chat on the phone. Regards Paul

LesG
Well after a long chat with Phil at Road and Race, I've changed my plans and will be switching to a Caterham 6 speed. Thank you Paul and Phil
