Molecular--Bob
Which size of rivnut do people use when making their scuttle removable? Thinking M4, so was going to get this to help with insertion here.
shn7
Do you have lots attached or passing through the vertical panel? If not then why not leave all those rivets alone and lift the vertical off with the scuttle top. That way it's far less to undo, just 2 nuts on each side chassis rail and one nut/bolt either side of the steering column.
Molecular--Bob
Unfortunately i do have lots of additions tacked to the vertical panel, hence the rivnuts.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 18, 2013 Leadership Team Share Posted February 18, 2013 I used M4 rivnuts. However .... I cut the top 20mm or so from an old bulkhead panel and fitted the rivnuts in that, then bonded it to the back of the bulkhead panel in the car. This means the holes in the bulkhead panel are still 4mm and the scuttle is not "pushed forward" by the top-hat section of the rivnuts. Did the same to TomB's car I guess any piece of ally strip could achieve the same job but I just happened to have a spare panel lying around! Stu. Drumster
M4 for me too, although unlike Stu I just put the rivnuts in the bulkhead. Also I only used 12 rivnuts in total.
Molecular--Bob
M4 it is then. Can you buy the vertical bulkhead panel from Caterham? Can't find it in the parts store. My old one has so many additional holes and dings that using the old one to hold the rivnuts would be a good excuse to fit a new one.
CharlesElliott
I used M5, simply because I have a stock of them.....I agree that M4 would probably be better.
Roger Ford
M4, and 1 rivnut every for every third rivet that I removed. Rest of the holes blanked off with aluminium tape.
Drumster
May need to call Bruce at Arch for a bulkhead panel.....
myothercarsa2cv
Or buy a sheet of carbon fibre and make something a tad more bling 😬 Not sure how rivnuts go in to CF though...
mic
Use M4 countersunk rivnuts.

mcerbm
Could someone who has placed rivnuts in their scuttle for remving later on send me a picture of their installation. Also if you purchased a tool for insertion could someone re-post the link, it must of been pre-website move so the link is dead, thanks.
Molecular--Bob
Hi'Fraid I dont have pictures of the vertical panel prior to instalation. I did every rivet hole using countersunk steel rivnuts, which was a pain. I used a cheap knockoff of the Memfast style tool but broke 2 M4 mandrels, so i eneded up getting the genuine Memfast item to finish the Job, having said that a friend uses these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engineers-Heavy-Duty-M4-Rivnut-Insert-Setting-Tool-Rivet-Nut-Nutsert-MADE-in-UK-/121582122365?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c4edbf57d in M4, M5 and M6 and hasn't broken one, but they are more fiddly to use.If i was doing it again I would find a workshop with an air riveter and pay them. 2GBR
If anyone needs the scuttle lip for the above S Forshaw style mod I have one available with M 4 riv nuts fitted so ready to bond to your existing scuttle postage would be very difficult as rather flexible
Support Team Shaun_E Posted March 12, 2015 Support Team Share Posted March 12, 2015 Having done this twice, my top tip would be to not bother doing every hole - half a dozen rivnut's will be plenty and makes removal and refit a lot quicker. Currently, none of my bolts are fitted and the scuttle doesn't move or creak!Best tool I have found is the memfast one: http://www.memfast.co.uk/
Molecular--Bob
Hi Phil not seeing your message (assuming that mcerbm is not Bob)Also noticed that the links have gone from my last post, so will put them back and hope they stay this time. The memfast Shaun linked above is what I bought in the end and it has been perfect.
makingff
As well as normal rivnuts, I've just ordered some rubber ones to see how well these work. Will let you know how I get on once I get a weekend free!

The clamping is good but some of them come loose from the panel when the screw is removed. The lip is also quite thick.Jonathan
makingff
Hi Jonathan, yes, they are what I ordered. They look like they might do the job and should be easy enough to try out (and they're relatively cheap if they don't work!).
