andy oliver Posted November 9, 2002 Share Posted November 9, 2002 Is anyone aware of the effectiveness of this stuff?.I wasn't sure they needed cleaning 'til reading Dave Walkers piece in CCC about tuning a Golf, and he used an ultrasonic cleaner.I occasionally put the STP stuff in my tintop but I don't really know if it's doing any good. wonkey eyed barmaid Posted November 9, 2002 Share Posted November 9, 2002 cant really vouch for injector cleaners from a professional point of view andy, but i put redex in my tank every now and again, and at service time i remove the spark plugs, pour some into each hole, leave to sit for 30 mins then refit spark plugs and start.... it sure as hell does something because you get a lot of black smoke from the exhaust for 15 mins after. a good blast then clears its throat. incidentally ive heard that a good brand of super unleaded has more added ingredients for keeping your injectors etc clean, so filling up with that frequently will do a similar job. evo mag tested this theory a while back on 3 different cars over X thousand miles, and got noticeable results. the fuel was optimax. hope this helps. On a dual point inj Honda that started not pulling as cleanly as it should inj cleaner worked a treat! There was no prob with the cat and this product. I have also used it on our Daewoo (I know, but it's cheap) before MOT time in conjunction with a thoughly good thrashing to clean her out after a year of my wifes shopping runs. BTW I am only running half a cat in the Daewoo as the exit half disintegrated and I removed it. She still passes the test Amazingly the exhaust lasted 7 years and 50000 miles on this cheap low quality VX rip off ❗ Some experts say that a properly maintained inj system will pass the emission test with no cat at all. Modern petrol has detergent additives in already which should help keep the injectors clean. When I had a sick escort ZETEC, I was advised by numerous performance/engine specialists NOT to use it, as it causes more problems than it it supposedly cures. Hope this is of help. Rob.
