dom69
Been trying to charge the Banner battery on the seven and it doesn't seem to be taking the charge, I think i let it run down too low. Is it time to get a new one? Have been charging for about 14 hours now but not enough to even turn the engine over. Thanks
classic1952
Had the same thing. Started the car on jump leads and ran it for a while, after which it charged normally. I assume the alternator is enough to get the process going but the charger is not. I have an excellent RAC branded charger with a start facility. After charging for 20 minutes you flick a switch and it gives you 5 seconds cranking power. If the above fails it is probably time for a new battery, in my experience anyway. Ian B
Have you checked the electrolyte levels Dom - should be covering the plates in all cells.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 17, 2012 Member Share Posted December 17, 2012 What sort of charger? There are reports that conditioning chargers may not be able to charge very flat batteries where traditional chargers (or the alternator) can. Haven't experienced that personally. dom69
got it started so went for a quick 20 mile trip, i realise its not a great time to go(heater on, lights on) but when i got home and tried to restart, the starter just 'clicked' although now there's enough charge to put the immob on, have left charging again to see what happens. richard- got no mail yet
classic1952
I reckon new battery. Mine takes a full charge in 20 miles.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 17, 2012 Member Share Posted December 17, 2012 What's the voltage immediately after it's charged and the charger is disconnected? What's the voltage as you try and start? When you've got those figures have a look at this thread. Jonathan

Stationary M25 Traveller
Was that a technical term related to car electrics ? 😬
stagemaker
I have also just tried to gor for a ride and found i had a flat battery. I was lucky and managed to jump using my second car. I have been contemplating getting a battery conditioner for some time. I have done a bit of reserach but thought i might ask you guys what is the best one. I have checked the 12 volt ciggie lighter and it works when the car has no keys in ignition so thats good news for convienience charging from there. I dont want to spend £100 but i suppose £50 is a good start and should probably get me what i want. Any ideas? Would be great to get one at the weekend if possible but i dont want to be stuck buying a substandard one just cause i went to Halfords.
Stationary M25 Traveller
You are asking blatchat for an opinion. Everyone knows there are loads of best ones !! Optimate, CTEK, Accumate ..... I use an Optimate. Well, actually I now turn off the battery master switch I fitted which isolates everything - including the immobiliser. So no drain from one week/month to the next. stagemaker
Surely opinions are a good start.....no pun intended.
Clive Faulkner
On previous threads CTEK and Accumate appear to be the most popular choice. I use an Accumate as it's made by the same people as Optimate which I used on my bikes for years. No bad experience with either of those. Clive. Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 21, 2012 Member Share Posted December 21, 2012 I don't think there's any solid evidence to say that x is better than y for modern conditioning chargers. People seem happy with what they've got. You need to get one that has enough oomph for the highest capacity battery with which you'll ever use it. Roger Ford
CTEK 3600 and 4000 have the advantage that they can be used as general-purpose chargers as well as conditioners. Most of the Optimates etc have a maximum current of less than one amp, so would take about three days to charge a typical tintop battery.
