Painting my bits

PAUL MARRIOTT

Recommended Posts

Now that frost and salt are approaching my mind is turning to upgrades and maintenance, upgrades this year are Brooklands and suspension, maintenance will be tarting up the sus components while I'm at the upgrade.

Query is - whats the best treatment, repowder coat, if so where? or Smoothrite as Caterham suggest? or any other alternative???

Paul,

Last year I totally rebuilt my Seven.

The suspension parts were stripped and some were painted with "Smoothrite" and some were repowder coated.

The painted ones will need to be touched up this winter.

The powder coated parts still look like new!

The cost for the powder coating was approx twice the cost of the paint, brushes and thinners so was pretty good value.

Photo's of the parts are in the "winter rebuild" section of www.se7en-up.co.uk

Try looking in the yellow pages for powder coating, thats what I did and found a friendly local company.

Steve, where did you get your's done? I need to get my front suspension re-powdercoated in December when I get the car reskinned and sprayed. Did you also have any sandblasting done? if so who did this?

Thanks

Martin,

The work was carried out at Crystal Finishes in Aldershot.

Tel: 01252 325999

I just gave them the parts and collected them a couple of days later. They must have sandblasted prior to coating as some of the bits were really bad to start with.

They also wrapped all the coated parts in plain brown paper ready for collection *wink*

I can recommend the Frosts POR15 (Paint-on-rust). This isn't a paint that puts rust on you understand. The good British winter will do that for you for free!!!!

It just means that you have to brush off the loose stuff and leave the rest as a 'key' for the paint. Much, much better than Smoothrite as it covers better with no pin holes to allow the rust to start again. *thumbup*

There is a company called Specialist Wheel Services in Langley, near me. They (funnily enough) restore vintage wheels and things.

I had a mountain bike frame powder coated by them a couple of years ago. Except that now I honestly don't know what they did to it. The finish is silver, and it is just so incredibly hard that despite being bashed against hard rocks, thrown into cars with other bikes and generally abused, it is unmarked.

Anyone have any ideas on what this finish is? Stove enamel? Powdercoat?

Steve.

Frosts (Auto Restoration Techniques Ltd) can be contacted at Crawford Street, Rochdale, OL16 5NU

This is lots & will do a huge area. They do a pint size, but postage etc the same so I bought in bulk. To stop it 'going off' I keep it in the 'fridge. (Not the indoor one but the one that serves as the overspill storage one in my workshop!!!)
