Starting issues HPC - not the battery

I've had an issues with my HPC ever since i had it 5 years ago which now seems to be getting worse. When I try and start the car sometimes I just hear a click and the engine doesn't turn over. If i keep trying then eventually it will go but this can take many attemps. It is not that the battery is flat as it even does it even with a new fully charged one. The number of times I have to try it before it will trun over has been increasing recently and can be as many as 10 or more.

Has anyone got any suggestions. Is there a knack that I just don't have or is a component slowly failing?

Any suggestion would be welocme.

Cheers,

Dave

Either a poor battery connection to the starter, a faulty solenoid or, possibly, dirty commutator/brushes. Turn the headlights on and turn the key. If the lights dim then it would suggest a poor connection, otherwise the solenoid, which is mounted on the starter, or the motor itself, requires attention.

Take the starter off and find a local motor electric specialist who will be able to refurbish it at a lot less than a new starter, unless you fancy having a go at it yourself. Its not too hard to get off , two electrical connections (make sure you disconnect the battery first), two bolts into the bell housing and a single bolt at the front end of the starter securing a 'steady' bracket to the block.

Do you have the 1:1 Bosch starter motor or a gear driven variety (Normally Valeo)??

The way to tell is if there is a right angle bracket securing the rear of the starter motor to the engine block?

If you have this type with the bracket, ditch it and get a gear driven type. The Bosch motors are not good, exacerbated by any additional loads on cranking such as higher lift cams or increased compression ratios.
