Jonathan Kay
The two most likely causes of what you have been describing are * a battery that doesn't have enough oomph to turn the starter fast enough * a bad wire or connection that has high resistance when the current is high and doesn't leave enough oomph etc... You've nearly but not quite eliminated the second by changing the connections. Did you note the voltage when it cranked with the other battery? (Those A h (amp hr) ratings describe the nominal battery capacity and aren't the most relevant property for your problem.) Jonathan
Ian B
Quoting Paul Aram: The banner is rated at 30amh I had a gel type Power Vamp on the last car but that is only rated at 18amh Is it the starting current that is more relevant? Yes. Cranking current is a lot higher on a Powervamp than the Banner. Another factor is that the Powervamp will likely hold it's charge for a lot longer, expecially in cold weather, than the Banner. Having said that, if the Banner is OK, and you fully charge it, it should be fine if disconnected completely (with no parasitic drain). The Powervamp doesn't like parasitic loads either, and as it has a lower Ah rating it will flatten quicker than the Banner, so a full battery isolator will help both/either.
